Protozoans Video I: Water Circus

This wonderful 17-minute program introduces your students to protozoans. The first six minutes are devoted to classifying protozoa, contrasting them to the metazoa and illustrating their relative size and habitat. During the remainder of the program, four general types of protozoa are identified. They include the Amoeba, Paramecium, Peranema, and Volvox. Illustrated are their means of locomotion and methods of obtaining or producing food. These organisms are also compared to some common pond water animals, like the rotifers. With applications from upper elementary through college, this video can be used before your first lab or as stand-alone instruction. It'll shed new light on pond scum!

With over 150 illustrations, you'll find the Protozoan teacher handbook to be a valuable resource in itself! It includes worksheets for students, information pages that reinforce topics discussed on the videos, illustrated guides to help you identify unknown specimens and even a student quiz covering each video. Our customers rave about this handbook. Use it and the three videos to teach an exciting, comprehensive unit in protozoology!

Protozoans Video II: In the Eye of the Needle

This 25-minute presentation takes a more in depth look at protozoans. A metric measuring unit, the micrometer, is introduced and with on-screen graphics, twenty different protozoans are identified with their corresponding sizes. The speed of a Paramecium is determined and a number of cell parts and organelles of various protozoa are identified. Learn about the spring-like myoneme on the Vorticella, the cirri of Euplotes, chloroplasts in the Euglena, water expelling vesicles in a Paramecium and see a variety of different shaped nuclei. From a single tiny cell in a Volvox colony to the giant amoeba, Pelomyxa, it's all here and can be seen inside the eye of a needle!

Protozoans Video III: Wonder Down Under

In this 24-minute program you will learn about the food chain, with emphasis on the interrelationship between producers, consumers, scavengers and decomposers. Watch protozoa attack swarms of bacteria, the Didinium devour Paramecia, and the scavenger Paranema at work inside the body of a dead rotifer! Students love these scenes! See reproduction in action and learn about the distinction between fission and conjugation. Watch the last thread of protoplasm snap as one Amoeba splits and becomes two!
